PaNIC - A boss key for Firefox
You want to be productive, right? Right. Here’s a Firefox extension that will possibly save your loafing butt from unemployment. Enter PaNIC: Productivity and Networking Information Component.
PaNIC is set to be activated by the Alt key and the tick ` symbol up there by the 1 on your keyboard. Press those two buttons at the same time, and all of your tabs in Firefox will get killed instantly, and replaced with a Google search for “increasing workplace productivity”. You can edit the hot keys and web page address via the extension’s preferences menu.
Important! This is tested on Firefox 2.0. This might blow up earlier versions of Firefox.
Install PaNIC 0.2(Size: 8kb Release Date: October 24th 2006)
Tested on Firefox 2.0.

Funtastic! A great option would be to recover closed tabs with a second key combination.

Jason- if you’re using Firefox 2.0 (which you should be… upgrade if you’re not!) then you can easily go to History > Recently Closed Tabs and you can see the ones that were axed.

Thanks Eric, I knew there was a reason I downloaded this new version. I’m a little underwhelmed so far with it (Firefox 2.0, not the extension. Haven’t had a chance to try it “for real” yet.)

Watch out, pretty soon THIS’ll be Googlebombed for “increasing workplace productivity” and then the bosses may find out! Best to have the next version give customizable options, maybe a pool of URIs to randomly draw upon?
October 24th, 2006 at 5:56 pm
Lurker, this version is totally customizable. The “increasing workplace productivity” search is just the default setting, which you can change to whatever you like. I just thought it was a clever search that might hopefully sway a boss who was pretty sure he or she just saw a pair of boobs on the screen.
The random pool is a neat idea, though.

Fantastic idea, made me smile. Had to change the keystroke as I use a laptop and the tick key wouldn’t work. I set mine to Alt q and it works well.

NuJOHB - Employment change facilitation for Firefox
If your employer is stupid enough to be fooled by employees using “boss keys” to evade personal web use detection, then your job (even your life) is probably in danger! You might be mistakenly issued a pink slip instead of an invitation to the xmas party, be instructed to delete all files in the shared “Invoices” folder to preserve disk space, or the ethernet in your office might rewired to connect to the power mains.
The NuJOHB extension not only sends your resume to all the top employment websites, it also uses voice recognition technology to help you through difficult phone interviews.
For Firefox v2.0 only, this extension has known bugs in previous versions (one Firefox v1.5 user was elected to City Council by mistake).

I thought this was a cute extension, but I had a problem with it I thought I’d share. Once I installed it, Firefox defaulted to “Always show the tab bar” even if I unchecked it during the session. If I unchecked it, the tab bar would not appear with one tab open for the remainder of that session, but when I restarted FF, the tab bar would appear again (with only one tab showing in it.)
Since I only use FF at home anyhow (no bosses here to worry about) I just uninstalled this extension and now I only see the tab bar when I have more than one tab going at a time…and the box “always show the tab bar” stays unchecked after my browser session ends.

This is a great extension! I didn’t realize until I used it that it closed all tabs, and only showed the one. I thought maybe something had screwed up.
It works perfectly on my PortableApps.com Firefox v.1.5.0.8.
As far as reopening the closed tabs, I have Tabs Plus installed so I just right-click on the opened tab, and it gives my a list of closed tabs.
Thank you for making a simple but elegant extension!

To clarify, my problem was with Firefox 2.0…I had another Tabs extension installed but it didn’t fix the problem.

In a real panic situation finding the boss key can be difficult. How about an option to implement the Panic situation when finger removed from Alt key?

Could it be extended to close any child windows too, eg. pop ups and such?
