I admit it, I’ve been a terrible blogger this year. I think I’ve gotten into this mindset that this place is all about Firefox extensions, which it is, but it can also be about a lot of other stuff. Sure, sure, the tagline is Firefox extension development, but the problem is I can’t write 365 extensions per year, or even 52 extensions weekly for a year. I need to branch it out a bit more- I won’t start discussing macramé or French existentialist poetry (does that even exist?), but I will be all about other developer’s ideas, and I’d also like to share some of my favorite extensions that I have absolutely no hand in developing.

I’m also going to make an effort to make the posts a bit more colorful. I plan on taking way more screenshots of future (and past) things, places, and ideas. I don’t know how you could take a screenshot of an idea, but I’ll figure out something.

To emphasize this last bit, here is a photograph. It happens to be of my new son, Asa, who admittedly (and rightfully so) took up a fair amount of any remaining free time I’ve had for the past four months:

They key to all of this is I realize that taking such long breaks in between posts is leading to a bit of a stale air around the site. I had to really lock down commenting abilities because of so much spam, something I will never be able to wrap my head around. It’s absolutely mind boggling how much of it exists, and I’m sure it’s hundreds of times worse for the Really Big Sites- I imagine slashdot and company keep an army of spam assassins, waiting by the delete key to annihilate any viagra ads or vicodin dealers.

So, along with all of that, I also made a resolution to drink more water. I will try my absolute damnedest to accomplish all of these things for you, dear reader. I don’t know how beneficial my consumption of water will be to you, but I guarantee I will be refreshed and have my thirst quenched. These are exciting times we are living in, no?

Do people actually click on entries that encourage you to buy viagra? Or are people really curious about finding all about HOT SEX GIRL BUCKET RACINE TORPEDO? I have to admit, that sounds fabulous. Tell me more about racine torpedo bucket girls. I want to know all about them!

So now you have to register to post a comment. Sucks, but that’s the way the ball bounces sometimes.

There are some really good resources floating around out there for aspiring Firefox developers. The difficult part is finding them all under one roof. Here are a couple of things that I’ve found or used over the past few days / months / years, so I thought I’d share a couple of them with you, and some of you out there could add to the list.

Ted Mielczarek has created a really handy-dandy extension wizard for either Firefox or Thunderbird authors. It creates a skeleton shell of an extension that lays out the code properly and has all the correct formats in place. It’s a really good start for someone who’s experimenting with extension creations.

He also has a plethora of extensions and other developer tools at his web site, so I suggest you check them out:

http://ted.mielczarek.org/code/mozilla/

Another useful tool (which might becoming obsolete soon, thanks to new, more friendlier ways of creating identifiers) is right here on this web site, although it doesn’t have a really clear link to it:

http://extensions.roachfiend.com/cgi-bin/guid.pl

It will generate valid GUIDs and you can also see how the script is set up.

Feel free to list some good resources you may have found around the net.

P.S. Buy my camera.

My friend Stephen Moseley just went live with a new web site called Cool People Care. The purpose of the site is such:

If people are told how they can make a difference in less than 5 minutes a day, they just might do it. And, just like tiny water droplets make a tidal wave, if you get enough people to care for 5 minutes a day, you’ll change the world. Thus, 5 Minutes of Caring was born. This 99-word, daily suggestion is full of practical tips and helpful hints designed to motivate individuals to act. Loaded with links to change agents and charitable organizations, this brief distraction from your daily routine will soon become part of it.

So take a few minutes out of your daily routine and do some good, as Elliot Ness would say.

I’m clearing out a bunch of stuff from the old homestead to make room for the new bundle of boy to arrive soon, and we need the extra cash. To e-bay!

There’s all kinds of swell stuff for sale, like a basically-new Nintendo DS Lite with Super Mario Brothers, a few types of watches, and obscure data cables! How can you not be excited??

A lot of books are going up soon on the chopping block, as well. I have some coding books, vegetarian books (The wife’s, not mine. I live on animal fat), and “The Hip Mama’s Survival Guide.”

What? I can be hip.
