    Word Count

Filed under: firefox extensions — Eric @ 11:26 am

Will count the number of words in any text that is selected. Simply highlight the text, right-click, and select “Word Count”. A pop-up window will show you how many words are in that selection.

    Install Word Count 0.3
    (Size: 8kb Release Date: October 30th 2005)

    Tested on Firebird 0.7, Firefox 0.8 – 1.5b1, Flock developer preview, Mozilla 1.6, 1.7b and Netscape 7.1.

Your wordcount extension interest me because it features some functionalities that I will need to write my own extension. However the popup or alert window doesn’t appear when I use it. I try on both windows and linux and nothing happen. I disallow popup blocking but no results. Any ideas?

    2. Etienne Jodoin Says:

Ok solve. Sorry I didn’t check the comment in the xul file!

    3. Eric Says:

Sorry about that, I mistakenly uploaded a beta version of wordcount that wouldn’t work out of the box. It’s fixed now.

      Hi,
First of all, this is a great extension.
Would it be possible to extend the functionality of wordcount so that you can calculate the total number of words from more than one page?
Like adding a second entry to the kontext menu which looks like this: “Add to previous wordcount” or something similar.
It would be even cooler if the wordcount was automatically added to the clipboard. As an alternative you could use a prompt instead of an alert and preallocate the input field with the wordcount. This way you could easily copy and paste it. Anyway, thanks in advance for thinking about it.

Tested and installed in Netscape 7.2 (Mozilla 1.7.2) and it works beatifully.

btw: noticed that your web page states in several places: ” Tested on Firebird 0.7, Firefox 0.8 – 0.10, Mozilla 1.6, 1.7b and Netscape 7.1.”.

Well, you can add NS 7.2 to the list. Not that too many people continue using this browser instead of Moz 1.7.7, but I personally can´t live without the ICQ sidebar tab client.

      Greetings:

I have tried your extension Word Count 0.1.1 and even after selecting some text, I still get the error message “Select some text first!” Therefore it doesn’t work for me.

      Using XP-Home, FireFox 1.0.4

      Thanks!

      Greetings again:

After deleting then re-installing Word Count, it seems to work but only in selected wites. One site where it doesn’t work does not allow modifications to a text area … so this may be the issue.

Then again, it will not work here (in the entry text box). I can send you a list of all installed extensions if this will assist you. Just drop a note with “Word Count” in the subject line.

      Thaks again for Word Count.

    8. Chris Says:

Like the concept of the word count and it works fine on anything that is hardcoded into a page.

Is this supposed to work in a text box as it would be really good if you could do this – I just get a Select Text First pop up when trying to count words in a text input box.

      Help.

    9. Frederic Jeanbart Says:

It is counting ok, but on the wrong “elements”… What I mean is that wordcount would find its most usage in text areas, that’s where most people need to count the number of words, even the number of characters (forums etc. ususally limit the amount of characters one can post). Will another version do this?

Thanks… But until the later happens, there is no real use for this extension, unless another developer would use its code for another functionality, like Web page parsing…

    10. Arlieth Tralare Says:

This is an EXCELLENT tool! Now if only there was a Thunderbird version…

    11. Dan Says:

I can’t get this to work on Firefox 1.0.4. I have Word Count in my context menu, but nothing happens–even if I enable pop-up windows. What am I missing?

    13. Sam Says:

Doesn’t seem to be working on 1.05 for me. I get the same problem as the 2 comments above.

    14. Findlay Says:

Am using 1.0.5 and the extension works great, thanks a lot.

    15. Rehia Says:

I love this extension, it saves a LOT of time compared to saving every web page and counting with another utility.
I’d also love to see a Thunderbird version – and perhaps an option to use another language’s rules for counting words, such as Spanish or French? Maybe the rules could be user-supplied? Just an idea, thanks again for your work!

    16. Patrick Grote Says:

Doesn’t work me, either. It shows up in the context menu, but when I select text and click on the option nothing happens.

It’s more than likely an extension conflict, but I have no idea where to start looking.

    17. Teli Says:

Ditto what Patrick said. This is a great idea for a plugin and would certainly be helpful, but it doesn’t work as intended.

It may be a conflict, but with over 40 other plugins – I don’t think I can test right away :)

    18. PDD Says:

Same here… the supposed popup window does not open with Firefox 1.0.7. Extension conflict is likely. (The first commenter mentioned some helpful remark in one of the XUL files but, alas, there isn’t any.)

    19. Pål Says:

Very useful plugin! Would be even more useful, if the output was both words and characters.
      Thanx again.

    20. Rob Says:

Great extension! What’s the license on this? Thanks.

    21. LeScH Says:

A good functuion. And does anybody know how to count the number of symbols in a text in this very way?

    22. Word Count Tool Says:

Lesch, you can try AnyCount, our Word Count, Line Count, and Character Count Software.

It is commercial but if you need it for some single task, it has 30-day evaluation period.

    23. Bellona Says:

I’m running Firefox 1.5.0.1, and I had the same problem as in comments 11-13 and 16-18. In my case it was caused by a conflict with Link Checker 0.4.5. Hopefully, this will be corrected in a future update, because they’re both excellent tools.

      Thanks for the great extension!

    24. Mohammed Says:

      Hi,

This is a great plug-in, what would be great is if it could be further extended so that I could enter a specific word and it would tell me how many occurances of that word are in the page you’re on or in the selected text…

      Thx

    25. Brian Says:

I found a site that does it for me: http://allworldphone.com/count-words-characters.htm

There seemed to be a few more (googled: word character count). It’s helpful just to be able to count the characters, etc. It might not be exactly what everyone here is looking for, but it’s what I needed at the time.

So, for anyone just needing a quick count on something they are typing, they can try it. Not an extension, but got my job done. :)

    26. Roger Says:

Please can you add the version number to the file name? e.g. wordcount-0.3.xpi

This is fast becoming the de facto standard for FF extensions.

      Regards,

      Roger.

    27. Dan Says:

Definitely needs the ability to count words within a text entry field.

For example, when writing letters in Gmail, or comments on a blog.

    28. Flokass Says:

      cool

    29. ronzky Says:

Word Count [de] (0.4) doesn’t work with the Add-on “Link Checker [de] (0.6.1)”.
I’m using WinXP, Firefox 2.0.0.1 (German).

    30. bugmenot Says:

WORKS GREAT!!!both word count and bug me not!!!
      Thanx

    31. bohemian Says:

worked perfectly and unintrusively, right out of the box. nice job, and many thanks!

    32. bugmenot Says:

Sadly, this extension cannot be used with Firefox 3, which won’t install it, because this extension (or its site) does not allow secure updates.

Any chance this will be fixed?

    33. linksys Says:

I cannot install this extension in my firefox
